Ah! Graduation. I mentioned it before, but I also completely forgot to mention the MU senior show back in May, in which I had three or four pieces.

I’ve got a fine art portfolio in the works, so more photos will be coming when that gets up and running (and it’s taken so long already, I can’t imagine you’ll mind waiting). But the longer that stays on the backburner, the longer I can go without writing a coherent artist statement …

Speaking of photography, I’ve also jumped the shark and joined instagram. Follow me as leeanarama!

The question: to shoot in the app, or use it as a post-processor? I’ve been doing the latter, especially when trying to get a quick shot and then devoting some time to picking the right filter later.

Another benefit of post-process: the option to crop by zooming in. I decided to try creating multiple images from the same photo (and the same filter for consistency) …

Interestingly, it also saves them as different sizes. And here’s the original:

Am I exploring storytelling, narrative and composition? Or is it just TOO MUCH FUN?

I have a confession to make. When I was writing the last serious post, I was listening to and watching this on repeat …

And the previous day, it was:

Maybe this offers some insight into my work process.

Here’s a project from my time abroad earlier this summer. I’m not really sure of how successful it is, or if I’m even going to present them again at critique this week (I’m also too cheap for frames right now). What do you guys think?

My idea: forced and incidental symmetry in the gallery space. We were in museums 5 out of 7 days of the week, sometimes in more than one a day. I’d also just learned a little bit about the white box/white cube theory of gallery design during my last semester. Photos of people looking at art are too easy to make, as I’ve also come to realize, and the idea of simply looking for “beautiful, candid coincidences” is also a deliciously vague cop-out. I tried to push the concept by looking for a specific instance (passing symmetry) and limited it specifically to the gallery space.

The idea that all of these photos are close to having some sort of symmetrical element but don’t quite hit it, or have some sort of interruption, also plays into the idea of looking too hard to find these.

Enough of me talking. Here’s what might be the final edit:

Interestingly enough, they all seem to work within the same color scheme. But as I went back in to edit these shots, I found that I had lost a lot of my initial passion for them. They’re not really as mind-blowing as I was first thinking.

In the end, this was a great exercise at developing a solid concept. Next time, I’ll be working to execute said concept with a some greater finesse and precision. Definitely with a tripod.

I’ve been using the internet at the Missourian for the last few days during the afternoon and since I was there for so long tonight … I got to design a page. Here’s what might be my last little gem for page three tomorrow:
