In a late effort to have more than four posts up for the month of July, here’s one of my favorite pages from this summer/this semester/ever:

Pretend that its also up on my portfolio. I wish we did more vertical floorboards/rails.

WHAT A MESS. Tonight saw all of the content for page 1 coming in early … with the exception of the centerpiece. Or the photos that the centerpiece was to tease to. A necessary wait, but one that threatened to unravel EVERYTHING WE HAD WORKED FOR AND HELD DEAR!!!!!

Below you can see two 1A designs that I had. On the left is the one that sat around from about 7 p.m. onwards. It looks great, but the only problem: the photo was from Sunday (we don’t run a Monday issue) and made no sense to put out front on Tuesday. Bummer. The 1A on the right was made in a hasty attempt to accommodate a different shape of photo after photos finally came in at 10:30 (on a midnight deadline). It looks awful.

Some kvetching at photo got me another shot for the original configuration I had put together. Here’s the final front:

Not ~quite~ as magical as the first incarnation, but much better than version two. Luckily I thought to make a copy of the changing page elements that I could return to – even after InDesign crashed on me (sadly, this is the norm). Here’s the accompanying inside pages:

Before 10:30, all I had was the Aleppo Grotto story (originally presented a bit larger) and the fair calendar, along with some other photos from Sunday (none of which made it to the final layout).

Only regret: on page 4, I wish I had reversed the photo and the text for the magician story, moving the photo over the the right and vice versa. As a single page, it makes perfect sense. But when combined with page 5, it gets pushed to the center of the spread. I’m hoping that the gutter will provide enough white space to keep each looking separate and modular, which was the whole reason that I decided to work with two individual pages rather than one double truck. For three pages reconfigured after 10:30, though, not bad. If I can say that about myself.

So wordy!

So why haven’t you been hearing from me? Wait till Thursday …

Tonight I designed two pages on Friday’s final shuttle launch. The fact that we don’t have a Saturday issue means that we’re running the story a day later than virtually every other paper out there, so page 7 also features a retrospective article from the AP. I revisited and updated a Q&A format I used once back in February.

This was also the first time that I’d designed a series of pages appearing together that were not a doubletruck. Good challenge. I was also thinking of and very inspired by the Orlando Sentinel‘s special section on the shuttle program that came out earlier this week. See the whole section on Charles Apple’s blog here.

Congratulations to Laura and Dale on their wedding today! Laura is my boss and I had the honor of helping set up some cameras to record the ceremony. The espresso bar following was also superb.

We also got to climb this sweet ladder to get in and out of the soundbooth and on to the balcony for filming. Exciting!
