Belated blog post! Last Wednesday was the annual Fire Factor at MU, which meant …. we light things on fire. Specifically, a mock-up dorm room. It’s one of the more interesting fire safety demonstrations I’ve seen, and I finally was able to see – and get paid to record – it this year as a part of my job in the Res Life marketing department.
This pretty accurately sums up the room burn. Almost EVERYONE had a smartphone or camera out. You can see more photos I took on MU Res Life’s facebook page.
Internet famous! A photo posted by my boss.
Another exciting thing – I designed the T shirts for the event this year and got to see them distributed. Fingers crossed that I see someone in one at a party.
This kid really wanted one that fit well. Does that mean he’ll wear it out? That’s what I like to hear.
Now, you really should have been there, but if you weren’t, make sure to check out the video. You can see me act a fool around 2:31:
And, finally … the teaser trailer we released before the event.
Should’ve become an actor.
rain again
Last week’s project was to produce an online, downloadable component (or ‘Ebook’) for the Missourian’s localized coverage of 9/11, intended for use on tablets and other. The focus is on readability, and learning how to design for the screen is much different than for print, because singular items/stories/packages on each spread remove the need for visual hierarchy between packages.
Sometimes, the designs feel a little “boring,” but doing anything more would be impractical.
The above is my favorite page from inside. I actually asked the photographer, Katie Currid, to go back into the studio and take some shots mimicking the lens flare used on the portraits she had taken of Missouri Task Force 1 members for a feature or splash page of sorts. MUCH more interesting than a flat, black background and also much more engaging than anything I could have mocked up in Indesign to replicate the effect.
Some more pages from inside:
I’ve heard some good things in response to it so far and am excited for future projects! Next time … I will remember to give myself credit on the table of contents and include our publication info. Until next time!
You can download the Ebook from the Missourian, or click here: Sept11_2011.
summer recap
The project that took up the second part of my summer: Welcome Back, a fall preview of sorts to events around Columbia in the coming months. Another student took the lead on the print design, but I conceptualized and created the calendars for both print and the online version (which I also did). The online e-book is available for download in PDF form.
Here’s a link to go download it from the Missourian site. If that ever goes down, download the PDF directly from me here: Welcome_Back.
I also got involved with some video editing and producing through my job in the marketing department at the MU Office of Residential Life. Here’s a preview we released for some future projects …
The school year’s started again, which means painting (I dislike it so far), infographics and anatomical drawing (highlight of my week) should dominate future posts. Let’s see what happens.
